The Bradford Disability Support Service is a new group in the voluntary sector, run by and for disabled people. Recently the group obtained funding from the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council to organise and deliver a research project examining the advocacy needs of disabled people in the Bradford area. The group promotes the independence and development of disabled people through a positive philosophy which is known as the "social model of disability". The group is committed to equality for all and believe that diversity enriches society.
People often find the term "advocacy" difficult to define and think that an advocate may be identified with the legal profession. In the dictionary the term "advocacy" is classified as backing, encouragement, promotion and support. Our service offers all these things, but the issue of support is vital in order for disabled people to increase their awareness, build confidence and fulfil their potential through ongoing development.
